ABWGC GENERAL MEETING

10 July 2008

The meeting was called to order by Vice-President, Kathy Christiansen at 12:30 p.m..

Kathy stated that Mike Magnani would be speaking to us about the plans for the North Course.

She reported that we had 96 players at our Invitational in May and had made $3160 for Fisher House. The breakdown was: $1000 from the "opportunity drawing," $1740 from tee box sponsors and checks to Fisher House, and $420 left over after all expenses were paid.

As membership chair, Kathy had no new members to introduce, but said she was expecting an application from Sherry Reigner, a friend of Cindy Carty.

Treasure -- Carol Dergan reported $1878.56 in the General Fund, most of which will be used for the Fall Tournament and the Christmas Scramble and party. She added that $219 of the tournament money came from the Mulligan and Magic putt sales.

Kathy asked each of the board and committee members to say a little something about what their job entailed while giving their reports as the nominating committee (Gay Pearl and Georgia Nally) would be meeting soon and she hoped those interested in any of the positions would let them know.

Handicap – Vicki Shotts stated that Linda Jeffery was the "most improved " for the month. Carolyn Elliott, Marion Wier, and Carla Hitt filled out the top four. She requested scorecards be neat and scores totaled even if not needed for the sweeps game. Also that adjusted scores be put in the correct spot on the scorecard.

Sweeps – Pat Emery requested that handicaps be listed in the space provided on the scorecard. When half handicap is used, list that, too. She added that, when we have shotgun starts, carts are mandatory so please do not give the pro shop grief. Carol Dergan was Ace today with a 68 net.

Ringer – Irene Williams was not present.

Rules – Jan Denardo hopes to have another rules installment on the website next week. She will also have hard copies available for those without computer access. She would like to have something new up every couple months or so. In response to a question she said what she posts varies. If you have a rules question feel free to call or e-mail her. She later added that one of the important aspects of golf etiquette is to be aware of pace of play. If you fall behind the group in front of you by a hole or more and the group behind you is constantly waiting it is common courtesy to let them play through at the first opportunity.

Social – Mary Ann Myatt described her job as overseeing the three main luncheons (Spring, Fall, and Christmas tournaments) and to communicate with us news of members in distress through illness, hospitalization, or loss of family members.

Trophy/Hole in One – Fran Keller reminded everyone to get their $2.00 in the Hole-in-One pot. You never know when it will happen. She has a list posted on the locker room bulletin board of those who have paid.

SDCWGA Rep – Marion Wier says that the County members only meet every three months now. She posts the information in the locker room. She said that there had been a request for members to send a letter to the Field Day Coordinator letting her know what they could do to have better attendance at their events. Also, if you have a big milestone (hole-in-one, breaking 90, 80...etc) they would be interested in knowing.

Tournament Chair/ Team Captain – Georgia Nally said her job as Tournament Chair involved working with the Social Chair, Treasurer, and Pro shop in setting up the Spring and Fall tournaments and determining fees and payouts. The President's Cup (net) is scheduled for Sept. 11 and 18. As Team Captain she encouraged everyone to consider joining team. You meet some great people and have the opportunity to play on different courses. Last year was a challenge because of medical issues with a lot of team members.

Mike Magnani, Regional Golf Course Superintendent, arrived to talk to us about what will be happening to the course in the near future. The plans are to rebuild Baker's 30-40 year old greens and run fresh water lines to the them instead of relying on river water. The hope is that the greens and the bunkers will be more like Sea 'n Air's after their redo. They have the plans and the funds, but are waiting the city's permission to tap into the fresh water line at the picnic grounds. At this point it hasn't been decided if they will close North for the estimated 6-9 months it will take or keep it open and rely on temporary greens (which would be sodded). He thinks that 2009 will see the water lines being run, but that the actual green work would not begin until 2010. Because of North's layout, the feeling is that all 18 greens will be worked on at once. If the North Course is closed we can use South, he says. A question was asked about the raised areas around some of the cups. Mike explained how the cups are cut and if the groundskeeper uses the cupsetter this should not occur. He said he would remind his crew to be more careful when setting the cups. He offered to come speak with us on a monthly basis if we would like.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Vicki Shotts, Acting Secretary
